THE PREDICTION
World number eight Andrey Rublev is the highest-remaining seed at the Bastad Open but amongst strong company with any one player from the last four deserving of the title come Sunday. The 24-year-old struggled past Federico Coria on Thursday in his first match for a month following, the ban on Russian players over much of the grass season, but he looked the better for it against Laslo Djere in a straight-sets victory. This will be his toughest foe by far, though, as 21-year-old Sebastian Baez’ rise up the ATP world rankings continues apace. The Argentine will set a new career-high at around 31st after yet another deep run on clay, defeating three top players on this surface in Fabio Fognini, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and a resurgent Dominic Thiem in three tight sets on Friday. Baez won his first ATP title this season at the Estoril Open but Rublev has three to his name just this year and he is so consistent at this level once he gets to the latter stages.
Three sets seem likely here and the reasonable risk could be backing Baez to win at least a set to leave the winner up to chance. Rublev is no stranger to a three-set win.
