World number 41 Sara Sorribes Tormo looks a decent shout as the favourite to win the Palermo Open on Sunday after some serious performances against Leolia Jeanjean and Anna Bondar. The 25-year-old is at home on the clay, with her best run so far coming at the Madrid Masters where she beat Naomi Osaka, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Daria Kasatkina on her way to the quarter-finals. World number 45 Irina-Camelia Begu played her best match of the week on Friday with a straight-sets victory over young French prospect Diane Parry and the majority of the Romanian’s four WTA titles have come on clay. Begu was the winner of their only previous meeting, in three sets on clay in the quarter-finals of the Prague Open in 2020, and this is likely to come as close. Perhaps taking three sets could be the suitable alternative to a result here but Begu to win at least a set is probably the most sensible route here in leaving the winner up to chance.
