World number 115 Harmony Tan claimed the victory of her career on Tuesday, destroying Serena Williams’ dream of a winning return to Wimbledon in a three-set epic under the lights. The 24-year-old is making her Wimbledon debut here and she has already matched her best Grand Slam showing by reaching the second round, with wins coming elsewhere at Roland-Garros last year and this season’s Australian Open. 32nd seed Sara Sorribes Tormo was set to be Serena Williams’ first tough test at SW19 and the Spaniard would be forgiven for already mentally preparing to face the 23-time Grand Slam champion after getting through her first round match with ease on Tuesday. Whilst Tan’s deceptively tricky playstyle actually ended up being a hindrance to Williams, Sorribes Tormo’s rugged baseline exchanging is likely to overpower the Frenchwoman. Sorribes Tormo beat Tan in straight sets at the Monterrey Open back in February and backing the Spaniard to win at least a set as the likelier victor here seems suitably cautious.
