THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Sara Sorribes Tormo played out one of the matches of the season last year in an eventual three-set defeat to Angelique Kerber in the second round. The Spaniard won her first WTA title at the Guadalajara Open earlier in 2021 but she has so far struggled to match the form that saw her stun Ash Barty at the Tokyo Olympic Games and reach the quarter-finals of the Canadian Masters. Former world number 24 Christina McHale qualified well this week to reach her first Grand Slam main draw of the season. The 30-year-old won her only WTA title at the 2016 Tokyo Open, where she beat Sorribes Tormo a year later before the Spaniard returned the favour at the Bogota Open in 2019 to level their head-to-head at 1-1. There is the slightest scent of a coupon buster about this match with Sorribes Tormo recently returning from a month out with injury but taking the Spaniard to win at least a set seems a suitably cautious concession.
