26-year-old Ryan Peniston received a wildcard to the main draw at Wimbledon after a superb month on grass, reaching the quarter-finals of Queen’s before defeat to eventual finalist Filip Krajinovic and the quarter-finals at Eastbourne before losing to Jack Draper. It will be the Brit’s Grand Slam debut and the most important match of his career as he enters on a new career-high ATP world ranking of 135th on Monday. World number 95 Henri Laaksonen enjoyed a similar late breakthrough at this level last season on his favoured clay when he stunned Roberto Bautista Agut to reach the third round of Roland-Garros. The 30-year-old emulated that level at the US Open to lose to Peter Gojowczyk in four sets but he has yet to win at Wimbledon or, more notably, at all on grass at tour level. Given the summer Peniston has had on grass, and that his afternoon slot on Court 3 on Monday is likely to draw strong support, back the home hopeful to win outright here.
