THE LOWDOWN

ROBERTO BAUTISTA AGUT

15th seed Roberto Bautista Agut won his fifth match of the season already with a s=four set victory over a resilient Stefano Travaglia. The world number 18 was exceptional at the ATP Cup but fell at the last hurdle to Felix Auger-Aliassime to see Spain finish runner-up and it should take a player of the Canadian’s quality to oust him in Melbourne. The Spaniard reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon in 2019 before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in four sets.

PHILIPP KOHLSCHREIBER

38-year-old Philipp Kohlschreiber continues to roll back the years at Grand Slams with a very impressive straight-sets victory over Marco Cecchinato on Tuesday. The veteran is at his best on the clay but Melbourne’s hardcourts are not the quickest on tour and he has performed admirably across all four Grand Slams over his now 21 years on tour.

THE PREDICTION

This is no gimme for Roberto Bautista Agut but he should be able to level his head-to-head record with Phillip Kohlschreiber here, with the German leading 3-2. Kohlschreiber beat Bautista Agut twice on clay in 2018 to take that lead and the veteran would certainly give the Spaniard a run for his money on the surface still but hardcourts should favour the younger man here. RBA has started 2022 like a train and his level should just about see him win out in straight sets here. After conceding one to Travaglia, though, the sensible move is for an outright win.
