THE PREDICTION

23-year-old Facundo Diaz Acosta set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 52nd after winning his maiden ATP title at the Buenos Aires Open in February, capping off an excellent swing on the South American clay, but he has something to prove here after losing to Sumit Nagal in qualifying. The Argentine should be considered a dark horse for a deep run now, riding that notorious second wind as a lucky loser, but former number nine Roberto Bautista Agut is still well capable of avoiding an upset despite his recent poor form. Victories over fellow ailing former clay stalwarts Dominic Thiem and Lorenzo Sonego in qualifying hands the Spaniard a decent foothold here in Monte-Carlo but stringing together consistent results has been his main downfall over the past 12 months. Back Diaz Acosta to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two capable victors.
