THE PREDICTION

This could be one of the matches of the first round between two top players on clay in Alex de Minaur and Roberto Bautista Agut. Both were stunned in the second round of the Madrid Open last week, De Minaur comfortably by Jannik Sinner and RBA in three thrilling sets to Dan Evans, with the Australian enjoying the better results on clay so far this swing. 23-year-old De Minaur had match points against Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open last month before losing in a match south of four hours to the eventual champion and he has been performing deceptively well on tour in recent months. De Minaur leads Bautista Agut 2-1 in their head-to-head record but the Spaniard won their most recent meeting at last season’s ATP Cup and they are yet to play on clay, on which the 34-year-old is probably the better player. Take Bautista Agut to win at least a set here in a match that could go either way.

Roberto Bautista Agut has pulled out of the Italian Open. Dusan Lajovic will now face Alex de Minaur. Take De Minaur to win at least a set.
