World number 15 Matteo Berrettini suffered a huge blow to some serious form on grass earlier this month as he unfortunately contracted covid-19 on the eve of Wimbledon. The 26-year-old reached the final at SW19 last season and he won two further titles on the surface in Stuttgart and at Queen’s Club, for a second year running, to suggest he can get back up to speed relatively quickly just as long as he does not suffer any lingering effects from the virus. We have seen some players struggle in matches just after covid-19, understandably, and that suggests the wise thing to do here is take former world number seven Richard Gasquet to win at least a set. The 36-year-old beat Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets on Tuesday to get some momentum behind him and he has been playing well on clay this season, with a run to the Geneva Open semi-finals perhaps foreshadowing another deep run in Switzerland here in Gstaad.
The Frenchman took a set from Berrettini in defeat in their only previous meeting at the 2019 US Open and with Berrettini’s last match coming over a month ago, on a different surface, this could be a tough day for the Italian. Take Gasquet to win at least a set here but consider a one-off on the veteran to win. It is best to leave this match out of an accumulator with much of it hanging on Berrettini's current fitness.
