THE PREDICTION

21st seed Botic van de Zandschulp came back from a set down to beat Emil Ruusuvuori in four on Thursday. The 26-year-old came to the fore at last season’s Roland-Garros with a five-set victory over Hubert Hurkacz and a five-set defeat to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina that gave him the confidence boost he needed to rise rapidly up the ATP rankings. Now at a career-high world number 25, Van de Zandschulp’s sticking power is clearly his greatest strength and the five-set format at Grand Slams suits him to a tee. 36-year-old Richard Gasquet is no stranger to a long match himself, with nine sets already played at Wimbledon – five against Joao Sousa and four against Mackenzie McDonald so far. The veteran is a two-time semi-finalist here at SW19 and he will be well-backed as a popular tennis stalwart this century but the longer this match continues to bigger chance Van de Zandschulp wins through.

The pair faced off at the Australian Open back in January but Gasquet had to retire with an exhaustion that later proved to be covid-19. As the pick was then, back Van de Zandschulp to win outright.
