THE PREDICTION
Second seed Rafael Nadal survived a small scare on Tuesday in a four-set victory over impressive young Argentine Francisco Cerundolo. The 36-year-old’s miraculous season has rewritten what was thought possible this year as he came back from surgery to win the Australian Open in only his second tournament in four months and set a new Men’s Grand Slam Singles titles record at 21. Never one to rest on his laurels, the Spaniard claimed an insurmountable 14th career Roland-Garros title earlier this month to take that total to 22 – beating then world number one Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Nadal is a two-time champion here at Wimbledon, his first coming in one of the greatest ever matches played over five sets against Roger Federer in 2008, but he has significantly fewer wins here (53) than at any other major tournament (Australian Open: 76, Roland-Garros: 112, US Open: 64).
This should be relatively straightforward for Nadal against world number 106 Ricardas Berankis, whom he beat in straight sets just this year in their only previous meeting. 32-year-old Berankis provided one of the big shocks of the first round by ousting seasoned grass-court specialist Sam Querrey in straight sets but the Lithuanian is likely to fall by the same scoreline here.
