THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Alycia Parks came into the Merida Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of 51st after winning her maiden WTA title at the Lyon Open earlier this month, stunning the top seed Caroline Garcia in the final. The American looks set for a big breakthrough season on tour but she will have to improve on a three-set opener over Fernanda Contreras Gomez on Wednesday if she is to progress in this wide-open draw, despite the fact that she once again beat a home favourite against a partisan crowd. Parks should have a better time of it against world number 140 Rebecca Peterson, who has been drifting further and further away from her career-high of 43rd in recent season. The Swede did well to beat Nadia Podoroska in straight sets on Wednesday but Parks can be backed to come through the outright winner after she beat Peterson in a Challenger final late last season.
