THE PREDICTION
World number 36 Shuai Zhang has found some of the form of her career this year at 33 years old, claiming her third WTA title at the Lyon Open back in February and more recently reaching the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open. The Chinese star is yet to drop a set at the US Open in victories over 30th-seed Jil Teichmann and Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova and she looks the solid favourite to come through this third round clash with Rebecca Marino to reach the round of 16 here for a first time. World number 106 Marino has impressed so far with two straight-set wins of her own over Magdalena Frech and Daria Snigur, who stunned Simona Halep in the first round, but the Canadian should find Shuai’s uber-consistent ball eventually frustrating. Three sets seem likelier than two with Marino a proper battler but back the Chinese to win outright.
