THE LOWDOWN

RAFAEL NADAL

World number four Rafael Nadal struggled in parts of the Madrid Open in his first tournament on clay this season after missing over a month with a rib issue. The 35-year-old was overcome by 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz in three sets in the quarter-finals last week but a three-set victory over David Goffin the day before suggested the Spaniard was some way off his best level just yet. Nadal won a 10th Rome Masters title here last season in three sets over Novak Djokovic in one of the best matches of 2021.

JOHN ISNER

World number 27 John Isner made short work of Francisco Cerundolo on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Italian Open. The 37-year-old won his only Masters title at the 2018 Miami Open, with just one clay title amongst his career total of 16. Isner has finished runner-up at four Masters events, most recently the 2019 Miami Open as defending champion.

THE PREDICTION

American veteran John Isner always give a good account of himself and he is better than he is given credit for on the clay but this should be a relatively straightforward win for 10-time Rome champion Rafael Nadal. The world number four leads big-serving Isner 7-1 in their head-to-head, with the American winning indoors at the 2017 Laver Cup, and 4-0 on clay including the round of 16 at the Italian Open back in 2015. Back Nadal to win in straight sets here as he looks to defend his title this week.
