RAFAEL NADAL
World number four Rafael Nadal was challenged by Miomir Kecmanovic on Wednesday but the Spaniard won in straight sets to throw aside any concerns over his immediate fitness. The 35-year-old won his first three tournaments this season, including a Men’s Singles Grand Slam record-breaking 21st major title at the Australian Open, before suffering a rib injury at Indian Wells that saw him snap a 20-match winning streak against Taylor Fritz. Nadal has won five Madrid Open titles so far in his illustrious career, most recently in 2017.
DAVID GOFFIN
World number 60 David Goffin beat in-form Botic van de Zandschulp on Wednesday to back-up an excellent victory over Aslan Karatsev in the first round. The 31-year-old has spent much of the last two seasons in the wilderness but he has still managed to win a title in each, most recently on clay at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech last month. Goffin finished runner-up to Daniil Medvedev at the 2019 Cincinnati Masters for his best showing at this level and also to Grigor Dimitrov in the ATP Finals back in 2017.
THE PREDICTION
This should be an entertaining match between Madrid’s favourite son Rafael Nadal and silky David Goffin but it would be a surprise if anything other than a straight-sets victory for the Spaniard came about. After almost two years of struggles it is good to see former world number 10 Goffin rising back up the rankings and he is always good value to watch. Notably, the Belgian won the most recent encounter with Nadal in the quarter-finals of the ATP Cup back in 2020 but Nadal leads this head-to-head 6-2 and 4-0 on clay, including in straight sets in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open back in 2017 – the last time he won the title. Back Nadal to win in straight sets.
