THE PREDICTION

21-year-old Qinwen Zheng brought a career-high WTA world raking of seventh into the Stuttgart Open after changing the course of her career by finishing runner-up at the Australian Open back in January. The Chinese has enjoyed a remarkable two seasons on tour, impressing across surfaces, but a change from hard to clay looks welcome as she has struggled – understandably – to rediscover her mojo on tour following the highs of Melbourne. A straight-sets victory over Sorana Cirstea is always a good result on clay but this should be a steeper challenge against world number 27 Marta Kostyuk, a fellow youngster coming into her own on tour.

Kostyuk, also 21, reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne and then backed up that run by finishing second in San Diego and exiting Indian Wells in the semi-finals to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. A three-set opener over Laura Siegemund in her first match back since that career-best Masters run is encouraging but Zheng is probably the more comfortable of the two on clay. Back the Chinese to edge this encounter, just as she did in three sets in Montreal last summer.
