19-year-old rising star Qinwen Zheng will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least 34th after stunning the top seed Paula Badosa in straight sets on Wednesday. The Chinese youngster has enjoyed an incredible breakthrough season in 2022, with highlights including reaching the round of 16 at Roland-Garros before a three-set defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek and then reaching the third rounds at both Wimbledon and the US Open. In fact, Zheng also lost to the eventual Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina, in tight circumstances to suggest she could be challenging the top 20 by next summer and this looks a step too far for world number 84 Claire Liu. The 22-year-old has so far impressed with back-to-back straight-set upsets over Alison Riske-Amritraj and Elise Mertens but it would be a surprise to see her through to a first ever WTA 500 semi-final.
