THE PREDICTION
19-year-old Qinwen Zheng will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 65th after beating former world number one Simona Halep from a set down on Thursday. The Chinese prospect profited from Halep falling unwell on court but the win is no less in keeping with some excellent form this season and she will be one to watch over the remainder of the year. World number 40 Alize Cornet gave what had been quite a subdued Day 5 at Roland-Garros something to get behind in the late match against former champion Jelena Ostapenko as she took the first set 6-0 and then rallied to beat the firebrand Latvian in three on Phillippe-Chatrier. 32-year-old Cornet has twice made the round of 16 at Roland-Garros before now but she reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time this season at the Australian Open, also beating Halep en-route.
This first meeting between the two leaves plenty more questions than answers but backing Cornet to win at least a set with the wind in her sails and the home crowd behind her seems the sensible option.
