World number nine Marketa Vondrousova conceded just three games to Ekaterina Alexandrova on Saturday to reach the round of 16 at the US Open without dropping a set. The 24-year-old has never made it past this stage in New York but, then again, she had not made it past the second round at Wimbledon before ghosting her way through to a maiden Grand Slam title and she is so far enjoying a similar dark horse run in New York. The last five players to beat the Czech are all ranked inside the top 10, or in Daria Kasatkina’s case have been very recently, to suggest this is a step too far for UCAA champion Peyton Stearns but this could be the making of the American in her first show court experience at the US Open. 21-year-old Stearns beat Katie Boulter in straight sets on Saturday to make the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time, in only her fourth major campaign, and she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 44th for her efforts.
Stearns will enjoy a huge partisan atmosphere on Monday, and likely thrive under it, but facing Vondrousova’s disruptive game for the first time should be too tough a task. Back Vondrousova to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
