World number 28 Shuai Zhang produced one of the best wins of her season, perhaps even career, to beat second-seed Caroline Garcia from a set down in the round of 16. The 33-year-old won her third WTA title at the Lyon Open earlier this season but despite plenty of success on tour her recent extra surge in form has come as a surprise, with a run to the round of 16 at the US Open earlier this month particularly impressive. The Chinese star will be well-backed throughout the Asian swing but she looks the favourite here with support behind her against world number 46 Petra Martic, who herself stunned a top seed in Karolina Pliskova. The Croat is a player who can blow hot and cold more than most but she too has won a title this season, and recently at the Lausanne Open, in what has been a welcome return to the level she was exhibiting before the pandemic. Martic won their only previous meeting in her pomp at the Miami Open back in 2019 but back Shuai Zhang to level things here with an outright victory.
