World number 80 Maar Sherif takes on number 81 Petra Martic for a first encounter that looks set to be close on paper. Former number 14 Martic reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open in 2021 but she brings a poor four-match losing streak into Rome after a tough start to 2024. 28-year-old Sherif endured a similarly woeful start to the season but she claimed her first win of the year in Madrid two weeks ago, reaching the third round before an exit to Elena Rybakina. The Egyptian took that momentum into a quality field at the Lleida Challenger last week, finishing runner-up to Katerina Siniakova in three sets to bring the much better form on her favoured clay into this tough clash. Back Sherif to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
