Former world number two Petra Kvitova gained revenge on in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia on Friday, beating the Brazilian in straight sets just over a week since losing to her in the first round in Birmingham. The 32-year-old has won almost two thirds of finals in which she has played, her most recent coming at the 2021 Qatar Open where she won the 28th WTA title of her illustrious career, and that experience coupled with the clear relief she has after struggling with form for so long will be a heady mixture here. World number 14 Jelena Ostapenko put in a blistering performance, though, to beat Camila Giorgi in comfortable fashion. The 25-year-old is the reigning Eastbourne champion and playing better than she did last season but a fit and firing Kvitova is still one of the toughest draws on grass. The pair share a finely-poised 4-4 head-to-head record and with Ostapenko claiming their only meeting on this surface as well as their most recent encounter in Doha, back the Latvian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable champions.
