19-year-old Holger Rune set a career-high ATP world ranking of 26th earlier this month after a huge run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros back in June, via a career-best ranking win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16. The Dane has a poor 2-9 record since Paris to suggest his confidence is shot, although he has drawn the likes of Cam Norrie and Pablo Carreno Busta in recent weeks and he has yet to truly find his feet on surfaces away from his favoured clay.
THE PREDICTION
World number 111 Peter Gojowczyk was one of a few surprise second-weekers in New York last season, stunning the likes of Ugo Humbert and Dusan Lajovic in five sets on his way to the round of 16. A five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz that day ended up closer than it sounds and the German has struggled to reach those heights since, although this looks another tight contest if he can bring some self-belief on Tuesday. Holger Rune will one day work out how to win matches like this more comfortably away from the clay but for now the Dane is far from the finished article. Back Gojowczyk to win at least a set here in anticipation of a potential early upset.
