World number 15 Matteo Berrettini made a winning return to the tour with a confident straight-sets victory over Ricard Gasquet on Thursday. The Italian appears to have avoided the after-effects of contracting covid-19 that saw him devastatingly miss out on Wimbledon as a pre-tournament favourite to reach the final earlier this month and technically his winning streak is still intact at now 10 on the spin. Berrettini won back-to-back titles on his favoured grass at the Stuttgart Open and Queen’s Club before falling ill and three of his now seven ATP titles have come on clay, including last season’s Serbia Open. World number 52 Pedro Martinez claimed his first ATP title earlier this season at the Chile Open and he has so far played well in Gstaad with wins over Carlos Taberner and Elias Ymer. A first meeting with an apparently unhampered Berettini is likely to go only one way, though, with the Italian a top 10 player in all but ranking right now.
