This is a huge opportunity for one of world number 66 Pedro Cachin or number 112 Corentin Moutet to reach the round of 16 of a Grand Slam, in Cachin’s case on his US Open debut. The 27-year-old has battled through two five-set slogs so far but with two vastly different challenges; first against the experienced Aljaz Bedene and second coming back from two sets down to beat a home underdog in Brandon Holt. 23-year-old Moutet’s journey so far has the bigger upsets, though, after he shocked 21st-seed Botic Van de Zandschulp in four sets on Wednesday to back-up an early win over Stan Wawrinka. The Frenchman is a confidence player with abilities far greater than his current ranking suggests, whilst Cachin’s ranking is perhaps a little inflated after some consistent success on the Challenger circuit. The Argentine is the form player but Moutet is a great dismantler of others’ games and playing him for a first time is always a unique challenge.
