World number eight Paula Badosa received a bye to the second round of the Guadalajara Masters as the top seed this week but the 24-year-old could probably have done with a kinder first round opener. The Spaniard has struggled with form and confidence this season despite starting 2022 off with a searing title-winning campaign at the Sydney Tennis Classic, which is fairly concerning as we reach the anniversary of her incredible campaign at last season’s October edition of Indian Wells where she beat Victoria Azarenka in three sets to lift her first Masters title. The Guadalajara conditions should suit Badosa but they also suit former world number one Azarenka, who has won eight Masters titles on North American soil across her illustrious career. The 33-year-old beat Elina Avanesyan in straight sets on Monday after avoiding a tougher opener against Shuai Zhang, who withdrew from the tournament, and a recent run to the round of 16 at the US Open will have boosted her own ailing confidence.
Three sets seem likelier than two in this tough match to call but Azarenka has won at least a set in each of their two meetings, so take that option to avoid picking a winner.
