World number four Paula Badosa passed a real test on Thursday with a three-set victory over Strasbourg finalist Kaja Juvan in a thrilling match on Suzanne Lenglen. The 24-year-old looked the favourite for Roland-Garros just a few months ago but her recent downturn in form has coincided with the rise and rise of world number one Iga Swiatek. Still, Badosa is likely Swiatek’s biggest remaining challenge with so many seeds falling out of the draw and after a recent blip her two results in Paris look like things coming back together for the Spaniard. World number 29 Veronika Kudermetova has so far beaten two qualifiers in Lin Zhu and Aleksandra Krunic with little fuss and she will be a thorn in Badosa’s side here.
The 25-year-old has finished runner-up on three occasions this season: to Simone Halep in Melbourne, Jelena Ostapenko in Dubai and Anastasia Potapova in Istanbul on clay and she is well capable at the upset here as she leads their head-to-head record 3-2. Notably, both of Badosa’s victories have come this season at Indian Wells and the Madrid Open on clay. This is a tough call to back confidently but the Spaniard should be able to come through the outright winner.
