World number four Paula Badosa started 2022 off like a train, winning her third WTA title at the Sydney Tennis Classic before a run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open was ended by Madison Keys. The 24-year-old has realistically enjoyed a strong season overall, also reaching the second week at Wimbledon, but there is so much potential for more that losses to the likes of Yulia Putintseva and Ajla Tomljanovic in recent weeks are concerning. Badosa’s best run at a major came in a quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros last season.
THE PREDICTION
This is a potentially tricky opener for Badosa against world number 89 Lesia Tsurenko after the Ukrainian found some excellent form over the summer. 33-year-old Tsurenko beat the liked of Elena Rybakina, now Wimbledon champion, and Camila Osorio before she had to pull out of the quarter-finals at the Eastbourne International but she ha snot played in over a month since suffering another injury at the Hungarian Open on clay. Badosa was born in New York and she will be desperate to make a better go of it here after failing to reach the third round in three previous appearances. Back the Spaniard to win outright here, with Tsurenko well capable of forcing a decider.
