World number four Paula Badosa made short work of her first round opponent Louisa Chirico on Tuesday, conceding just three games to the qualifier for a first win on grass this season. The 24-year-old was one of tennis’ most-improved players in 2021 with a run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Open a turning point that saw a first WTA title won at the Serbia Open and a stunning Masters title won at Indian Wells. The Spaniard claimed the third WTA title of her career at the Sydney Tennis Classic at the start of this season but in more recent months she has struggled to impose herself on draws. A first tour-level meeting with Irina Bara is likely to be a comfortable enough fixture after the world number 122 claimed her first Wimbledon victory on debut in straight sets over Chloe Paquet. Badosa can be tentatively backed to take this outright between two players with very little grass-court experience between them.
