World number 31 Elise Mertens came back from a set down to beat Camila Osorio on Monday as the Colombian was forced to retire from the third set. 26-year-old Mertens has been struggling somewhat with her form this season in the singles but she is remarkably consistent at Grand Slams having made at least the third round in each of her last 17 major appearances – stretching back to a semi-final exit at the 2018 Australian Open. She could be tested here by world number 100 Panna Udvardy after the Hungarian grabbed one of the best results of her career with a straight-sets victory over Tamara Zidansek. The 23-year-old is through to the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time having made her debut at this level back in January at the Australian Open but Mertens’ experience should eventually tell in this first meeting between the two.
