THE LOWDOWN
World number 14 Pablo Carreno Busta found some huge form from seemingly nowhere to win a first Masters title at the hands of Hubert Hurkacz in Montreal earlier this month. The 31-year-old is a two-time US Open semi-finalist, most recently by overcoming Novak Djokovic in 2020 after the Serb was defaulted for infamously, accidentally, striking a line judge with a frustrated ball. Carreno Busta beat the likes of Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner and Cam Norrie in Montreal to suggest he is a reasonable dark horse in New York.
Former world number three Dominic Thiem won his first Grand Slam title here back in 2020, coming back from two sets down to beat Alexander Zverev. That was the most recent of the Austrian’s 17 ATP titles after several wrist injuries eventually required surgery last season, seeing him miss 14 months from the tour until this spring. Thiem reached the semi-finals of the Gstaad Open last month before defeat to Matteo Berrettini, with quarter-finals in Bastad and Kitzbuhel also greatly encouraging. The 28-year-old is one of three players defending their US Open titles this season, with Rafael Nadal also returning to New York for the first time since his victory here in 2019.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating first round clash between two heavyweights on tour in former world number four Dominic Thiem and world number 14 Pablo Carreno Busta, particularly as the Austrian has won all seven of their previous encounters on tour. Thiem came back from a set down to beat PCB in the third round of the US Open back in 2016 and five sets gives him more opportunity to work some kinks out of his current game. However, Carreno Busta is coming off the best result of his career as a new Masters champion and he knows how to go on a deep run in New York as well as 2020 champion Thiem. Given their head-to-head record, backing PCB to win at least two sets as the likelier of two capable victors looks the sensible compromise. It would not be a surprise. Though, to see Thiem suddenly click into gear.
