World number 14 Pablo Carreno Busta beat fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets on Tuesday to get his Paris campaign underway. The 31-year-old claimed the biggest title of his career at the Canada Masters back in August and he has reached the quarter-finals in each of his last three tournaments. World number 16 Denis Shapovalov has also found some late-season form to finish runner-up at two hardcourt tournaments – first to Yoshihito Nishioka at the Korea Open and most recently to Daniil Medvedev at last week’s Vienna Open. The 23-year-old came back from a set down to oust Francisco Cerundolo in a reasonably solid start to the campaign but brick-wall Carreno Busta leads their head-to-head record 4-2 with the kind of game that can frustrate the Canadian into mistakes. Shapovalov beat PCB in the ATP Cup final in January to help Canada to the win but back the Spaniard to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
