THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Oscar Otte came back from a set down to stun Nikoloz Basilashvili on Thursday, backing up an excellent result over Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round. The German will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 42nd and one more win would see him comfortably break the top 40 to cap off the best 12 months of his career by some way. Otte burst onto the scene at Wimbledon last season with a thrilling five-set defeat to Andy Murray but he backed that up later at the US Open, reaching the round of 16, and more recently he reached the semi-finals of two home tournaments: the Munich Open on clay and last week’s Stuttgart Open on grass. On both occasions the German lost to the winner and whilst world number 23 Karen Khachanov has impressed this week this first meeting with Otte looks a not-so surprising upset waiting to happen.
Khachanov has beaten an out-of-sorts Aslan Karatsev and a clay-court specialist in Laslo Djere this week so far. The rugged baseliner can take this all the way but backing Otte to win outright, or at least a set inside an accumulator, seems reasonable on form.
