THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Friday between world number seven Carlos Alcaraz and number 36 Oscar Otte, with the unassuming German quietly becoming a top player on grass. 28-year-old Otte is yet to drop a set this week after a solid display against peter Gojowczyk and just four games played in his second round match against Chris Harrison, who unfortunately had to retire injured. This is in stark contrast to Otte’s campaign last season, when he beat Arthur Rinderknech in five sets before defeat to Andy Murray in a thriller by the same scoreline. The German is inside the top 10 on ranking points this month on grass after runs to the Halle Open and Stuttgart Open semi-finals and he has made three semi-finals this season.
19-year-old Alcaraz, though, is clearly the real deal. After a five-set escapade against Jan-Lennard Struff the Spaniard came out sharper to beat Tallon Griekspoor in three sets on Wednesday. The Spaniard was still a ways off his best level against Griekspoor, which should frighten the rest of the draw with each round he manages to reach on a surface he has next-to-no experience on. This match looks a real coupon buster a few ways round but count a prodigal talent out at your peril. Backing Otte to win a set but Alcaraz to eventually come through the victor could be the shrewd move here but leave this one out of an accumulator.
