World number 10 Ons Jabeur was in a proper battle with Jasmine Paolini on Thursday, outlasting the Italian in a tight first-set tiebreak before rallying to win the second more comfortably. The 27-year-old has been in excellent form on clay this month, finishing runner-up to Belinda Bencic at the Charleston Open and losing to Paula Badosa in three tight sets in the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart Open.
VARVARA GRACHEVA
World number 73 Varvara Gracheva came back from a set down to beat Alize Cornet in three sets on Thursday. The 21-year-old is making her Masters debut at the Madrid Open after qualifying well earlier this week. Gracheva reached the third round of Roland-Garros last season for some strong clay substance.
THE PREDICTION
Ons Jabeur has needed some serious stopping in tournaments this season, with a three-set defeat to Daria Saville at Indian Wells the only real anomaly. The Tunisian has been superb on the clay already this month and she will be better-equipped to expect a tough challenge here than Alize Cornet, with Varvara Gracheva’s element of surprise now spent. Gracheva looks a comfortable clay-courter but this would be significantly the biggest win of her career if she was to shock Jabeur. Taking the world number 10 outright looks the sensible thing to do but realistically Jabeur should be winning this in two.
