World number 10 Ons Jabeur has struggled through her two matches so far against inspired opponents in Jasmine Paolini and Varvara Gracheva but the Tunisian has been in fine form on clay so far this year. The 27-year-old finished runner-up to next Madrid opponent Belinda Bencic last month and then produced some excellent tennis in a quarter-final exit to Paula Badosa at the Stuttgart Open. Jabeur won her first WTA title on grass at last season’s Birmingham Classic.
BELINDA BENCIC
World number 13 Belinda Bencic should be considered one of the tournament favourites here in Madrid after overcoming Karolina Muchova in three sets on Saturday to extend her winning streak to eight matches. The 25-year-old won the Charleston Open last month on clay after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Miami Open was ended by Naomi Osaka and after several months of struggling with her form this positive version of the Swiss is near-unstoppable. Bencic won two Gold Medals at the Tokyo Olympic Games last season.
THE PREDICTION
This looks set to be another thriller between Belinda Bencic and Ons Jabeur if they’re previous two meetings are anything to by. Bencic leads their head-to-head record 2-0 after recently beating Jabeur in the Charleston Open final last month over three sets but they met at this stage this time last season in another tight battle before the Tunisian was forced to retire injured. Two wins on clay for in-form Bencic is pretty clear evidence but it would not be a surprise to see Jabeur snatch this. Take Bencic to win outright or to win at least a set inside an accumulator.
