THE LOWDOWN

World number two Ons Jabeur finally achieved her dream of becoming the first African to qualify for the WTA Finals to cap off an incredible career-best season. The Tunisian has finished runner-up at two Grand Slams this year, to Elena Rybakina from a gut-wrenching losing position at Wimbledon and more recently to world-beating Iga Swiatek at the US Open but she claimed her first Masters title at the Madrid Open in May. 28-year-old Jabeur has a game for all surfaces but the hardcourt conditions in Fort Worth are likely to favour most of her competitors for the title this week. However, no player could want this title more than Jabeur and she will be well-backed as a hugely popular player wherever she goes on tour.

World number seven Aryna Sabalenka has endured a frustrating and often concerning season on tour but the fact that she has still qualified for the WTA Finals is all the more impressive because of it. The 24-year-old has finished runner-up at the Libema Open and Stuttgart Open this season as well as, more recently, the semi-finals of the US Open with much of her powerful serve-focused game missing for whole chunks of 2022.

THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Aryna Sabalenka has plenty of time to return to her former glory at just 24 years old but for now the Belarussian remains a wholly unpredictable anomaly on tour, capable of blasting past her opponents with as many aces as double faults as well as faltering meekly on a poor day. Current world number tow Ons Jabeur has the weapons to defuse Sabalenka’s game at 80/90% but she can also be overpowered by the harder servers on tour, as Elena Rybakina proved in the Wimbledon final this summer. This is a really tough call to make given Sabalenka’s huge margin for error but she has taken at least a set from each of their three previous matches in a 2-1 head-to-head record and the Fort Worth conditions should favour her more than Jabeur. Back the Belarussian to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
