World number 93 Oceane Dodin qualified well with a three-set victory over Beatriz Haddad-Maia to reach the main draw at the Madrid Open for a second time. The 25-year-old made the round of 16 here in 2017, where she set a career-high WTA world ranking of 46th, but until recently she was spending much of her time on the ITF circuit. This is a seriously tough opener against world number 18 Elena Rybakina, who famously stunned Serena Williams to reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last season on clay. The 22-year-old is a powerful player with a superb serve and that kind of game has been favoured by the high altitude at the Madrid Open over the years. The Kazakh won her first WTA title on clay at the 2019 Bucharest Open and a three-set defeat to world number two Paula Badosa at last week’s Stuttgart Open suggests she will be too much for Dodin here. Rybakina won their first encounter in three sets at the St. Petersburg Open in 2020 but she can be backed to take this in two.
