Former world number one and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams is playing in her first WTA tour match outside of a major since May 2021 as she makes a more calculated approach to next month’s US Open. The 40-year-old is a three-time Canada Masters champion seeking her first win on tour since beating Danielle Collins in the third round of last season’s Roland-Garros, with two first round exits at Wimbledon last season and last month since. World number 57 Nuria Parrizas-Diaz will consider this first meeting with the American one of the honours of her career and a reward for her huge efforts in hauling herself out of the ITF circuit in the latter years of her career. The 31-year-old qualified well this week in Toronto but she has been struggling with form in recent months, with just two wins since May. The Spaniard is at her best on a hardcourt whilst Williams should find the conditions here to her liking. Fitness will always be a concern for the remainder of her illustrious career but backing Williams to win outright looks a reasonable risk in this match-up.
