World number 52 Nuria Parrizas-Diaz played well to beat in-form Sorana Cirstea in straight sets on Thursday on her Madrid Open debut. The 30-year-old Spaniard was one of 2021’s most improved players as she successfully made the huge leap from a successful career on the ITF circuit to a career-high WTA world rankling of 45th set last March.
EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA
World number 45 Ekaterina Alexandrova was unlucky to have to qualify for the Madrid Open but she came through those as the top seed with little fuss and likely used the momentum to beat 10th-seed Jelena Ostapenko in three sets. The 27-year-old has been in excellent form on the clay so far this month with a run to the semi-finals of the Charleston Open ended by eventual champion Belinda Bencic and an impressive three-set def3eat top Anett Kontaveit at the Stuttgart Open.
THE PREDICTION
Beating Jelena Ostapenko on clay is no mean feat and Ekaterina Alexandrova has needed some serious top players to beat her over her last five tournaments. Nuria Parrizas-Diaz will be backed to the hilt by a partisan Spanish crowd as an impressive underdog who bloomed later than most but it would be a surprise to see her outlast Alexandrova over five sets. Backing the Russian to take at least one here looks the suitably cautious move but realistically the Russian should be coming through here.
