NOVAK DJOKOVIC
World number one Novak Djokovic beat Casper Ruud in straight sets to take a spotless record into the Italian Open final. The Serb claimed the 1000th win of his stellar career against Ruud, just before he turns 35 next week, and he can extend his own record of ATP 1000 Masters titles if he wins a 38th on Sunday. Djokovic is a five-time Italian Open champion but he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal here last season in one of the best matches of the year. He took that form straight into Roland-Garros, though, where he sought revenge on Nadal in the semi-finals before coming back from two sets down to beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas will move back up to fourth on Monday after reaching the final of the Italian Open for a first time. The 23-year-old came back from a set down to beat Alexander Zverev on Saturday, avenging his three-set defeat to the German at the same stage of last week’s Madrid Open. Tsitsipas successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month for a second Masters title overall and he will head into Roland-Garros as an outside favourite behind the likes of Djokovic, Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz as last season’s runner-up.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating occasion between Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas, particularly for the Greek after his capitulation in last season’s Roland-Garros final. Tsitsipas won two of his first three meetings against Djokovic at the 2018 Canadian open and 2019 Shanghai Open but since then the Serb has won five encounters in a row including their quarter-finals here in Rome last season. Furthermore, Djokovic has won all three of their finals at the 2019 Madrid Open, 2020 Dunai Tennis Championships and last season in Paris and, perhaps surprisingly, all four of their matches on clay. Each of their last three meetings have gone the distance, though, with two five-setters in Paris suggesting this could be a thriller and also that backing Djokovic the outright winner is the sensible call.
