THE LOWDOWN

NOVAK DJOKOVIC

World number one Novak Djokovic was assured in a straight sets victory over Aslan Karatsev on Tuesday, just three days after losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open. The 34-year-old finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal here last season in one of the best matches of 2021 and he took that form all the way to the Roland-Garros title, beating Nadal in four sets in the semi-finals. Djokovic owns a record 37 ATP Masters 1000 titles, five of which have come in Rome.

STAN WAWRINKA

37-year-old Stan Wawrinka came back from a break down in the third set of a thrilling clash with Laslo Djere on Wednesday, backing up a brilliant comeback against Reilly Opelka in the first round. The former world number three is an elite all-courter with three Grand Slam titles to his name, including the 2015 Roland-Garros title, but back-to-back three-set victories is a surprise in only his second tournament back from a year off the tour through injury.

THE PREDICTION

There have been some astounding matches played between Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka over the years and after last week’s bout with Andy Murray was unfortunately called off this seems a suitable replacement for a spot of nostalgia. 37-year-old Wawrinka has no business being as clutch in two three-set matches with solid clay-courters after so long off the tour but he will be popular on Thursday in this round of 16 clash and that could irk five-time champion Djokovic. Wawrinka won Roland-Garros in 2015 and the US Open in 2016 at Djokovic’s expense for two of his six victories over the Serb and the Swiss won their most recent encounter at the US Open three years ago where Djokovic was forced to retire in the third set. Djokovic leads this head-to-head record 19-6, though, and he is the clear favourite to come through against a returning Wawrinka. Back Djokovic to win in straight sets.
