Reigning Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic is coming in cold with just some exhibition grass-court tennis in him this week but the 35-year-old remains the clear favourite to win a 21st Grand Slam title here. This time last season that would have been a record-breaking feat but Rafael Nadal’s miraculous season so far has changed the goalposts entirely and with the US Open still requiring vaccinations to enter this could be the Serb’s only chance at a major this year. Djokovic could match Roger Federer’s record seven Wimbledon titles this season, going ahead of the Swiss in the Men’s Grand Slam race for a first time if he does so.
World number 75 Soonwoo Kwon has lost each of his last four matches including at the Surbiton Challenger, with two of that number coming on grass. The 24-year-old needed four sets to beat qualifier Daniel Masur at this stage last season and whilst he can often be backed to challenge anybody this is likely to be fairly routine for Novak Djokovic. The Serb beat Kwon in straight-sets in their previous meeting at last season’s Serbia Open and he will be eager to make a statement of intent here.
