THE PREDICTION

This is not an easy opener for world number seven Novak Djokovic as he starts the defence of his Paris Masters in a first encounter with Maxime Cressy. World number 34 Cressy is a serve-and-volley specialist that thrives in fast conditions like grass and controlled conditions like indoor hardcourts and the American should receive plenty of the support here having been born in France. Cressy beat an ailing Diego Schwartzman in straight sets on Monday to get some momentum going, whilst Djokovic comes in a little cold despite riding a nine-match winning streak from back-to-back titles won at the Tel Aviv Open and Astana Open in early October. The 35-year-old remains the clear favourite to cone through but whilst he has not dropped a set since the Laver Cup he can often start tournaments a little sluggishly. The sensible call is backing Djokovic to win outright with three sets a distinct possibility. However, a one-off on Cressy to win at least a set, for at least one tiebreak in the match and for Djokovic to win could be fruitful here.
