THE LOWDOWN

World number seven Novak Djokovic has not played since winning his seventh Wimbledon title, and 21st Grand Slam title overall, at Wimbledon back in July. The 35-year-old’s vaccination status saw him frozen out of the North American hardcourt swing and he was handed an extra blow by the controversial points ban at Wimbledon, which has in turn thrown the entire ATP rankings system haywire, with his next run of tournaments on tour hard to call. Djokovic is making only his second appearance at the Laver Cup and he lost both of his matches on his debut in singles and doubles back in 2018.

24-year-old Frances Tiafoe is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 19th after reaching the semi-finals of the US Open earlier this month, where he lost in five thrilling sets to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The American still owns just one ATP title to his name but he has been visibly improving over the last 12 months, starting with finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Vienna Open around this time last season. Tiafoe and Jack Sock played well to edge out Rafael Nadal and the retiring Roger Federer in a deciding tiebreak of their doubles clash on Friday night to take the Laver Cup to 2-2.

THE PREDICTION

Frances Tiafoe was made for matches like this in arenas like this. The 24-year-old came close to beating Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the US Open earlier this month, having stunned an out-of-sorts Rafael Nadal in the round of 16, and he would likely have gone on to win the tournament if he had reached the final on momentum alone. Whilst Novak Djokovic is still Novak Djokovic, the Serb has yet to win a Laver Cup match and the fact that it is his first time on court since July should see Tiafoe win at least a set here – particularly as Djokovic so often drops his opening set these days. Djokovic beat Tiafoe in four tight sets in their only previous meeting at the Australian Open last season and backing the American to win the first set in this encounter, pumped from last night’s victory, looks a shrewd move here.
