NOVAK DJOKOVIC
World number one Novak Djokovic took the first set from Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals of the Madrid Open last weekend before the Spaniard came back to beat him in an incredible match. 34-year-old Djokovic is still not quite up to his imperious best working order with so few matches behind him this season but that could actually end up working in his favour as the year progresses, with last season’s exhaustion at the US Open seeing him lose out to Daniil Medvedev. Five-time Rome Masters champion Djokovic finished runner-up here last season to Rafael Nadal in one of the best matches of 2021.
ASLAN KARATSEV
World number 35 Aslan Karatsev has struggled for form on tour ever since winning his third ATP title at the Sydney Tennis Classic back in January but a three-set victory over Lloyd Harris on Sunday could be the turning point. The 28-year-old burst onto the scene in January last season with a stunning run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open as a qualifier before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Tuesday between world number one Novak Djokovic and Aslan Karatsev, with their head-to-head record finely poised at 1-1. Djopkovic took their first meeting at the Australian Open but Karatsev probably played the match of his life to beat Djokovic in three sets in the semi-final of the Serbia Open last season, one of the longest three-set matches in history, before running out of steam against Matteo Berrettini in the final there. The Russian has been struggling on tour but after a solid win on Sunday he should be up for this in a huge way and Djokovic often starts tournaments slowly. Backing Karatsev to win the first set and Djokovic to win would be a shrewd move indeed but the sensible pick remains backing the Serb outright.
