NOVAK DJOKOVIC
Novak Djokovic broke another record in Men’s tennis on Tuesday by beating Gael Monfils for an 18th time out of 18 meetings to extend the widest ever margin in a head-to-head record. In doing so, the 34-year-old maintained his place at the top of the ATP world rankings for another week, making up for a loss in the Serbia Open final last week to Andrey Rublev. Djokovic is riding a six-match winning streak in Madrid after winning his third title here last time out in 2019.
ANDY MURRAY
World number 78 Andy Murray won back-to-back matches on tour for the first time since January with an excellent victory over Denis Shapovalov late on Tuesday night. The former world number one owns 14 ATP Masters 1000 titles including two here from 2008 and 2015, beating Rafael Nadal in the final of the latter. Murray’s last title on clay came at the 2016 Italian Open, where he beat Novak Djokovic in straight sets.
THE PREDICTION
The last seven meetings between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray have been finals, including two Grand Slam finals in 2016 with Djokovic winning the Australian Open and Roland-Garros and Murray ending the season with victory at the ATP Finals. The pair’s last meeting came in a three-set victory for Djokovic in the Qatar Open in 2017 to take their head-to-head record to 25-11 in favour of the Serb. 19 of their 36 meetings have been finals, with Djokovic leading 11-8 in that respect in one of the greatest rivalries in tennis. Six of their matches have come on clay with five going in Djokovic’s favour and that makes grim reading for Murray despite his performance against Shapovalov. Take Djokovic to win outright here, although backing Murray to win the first set could make for a valuable one-off. Djokovic has lost the first set in four of his last six matches.
