NIKOLOZ BASILASHVILI
World number 25 Nikoloz Basilashvili started sluggishly against Dan Evans on Monday before overcoming the Brit in an impressive tiebreaker on his way to a straight-sets win. The 30-year-old has not won back-to-back matches for seven tournaments on the spin since failing to defend his Qatar Open title back in February. Basilashvili owns five ATP titles overall, including three on clay after winning last season’s Munich Open.
DENIS SHAPOVALOV
World number 16 Denis Shapovalov needed three sets to oust an out-of-sorts Lorenzo Sonego on Monday but he will have won few fans in Rome after reacting to the partisan atmosphere. The 23-year-old still owns just one ATP title from the 2020 Stockholm Open but he famously reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon last season and took eventual Australian Open champion Rafael Nadal to five sets in the quarter-finals in Melbourne back in January.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a bad-tempered, tetchy match with very few rallies between two of the hardest hitters on the ATP tour. Denis Shapovalov may get more of the same treatment from an Italian Open crowd who pick their favourites quickly and back them to the hilt and Nikoloz Basilashvili felt some of that love on Monday against Dan Evans. The Georgian can be superb on clay when he is on and he is certainly the more comfortable player on this surface. Basilashvili also leads this head-to-head 2-0, so backing him to earn at least a set looks a reasonable way out of picking the winner between two of the least predictable players on tour.
