NIKOLOZ BASILASHVILI
World number 20 Nikoloz Basilashvili won a tough opening round match against Fabio Fognini in straight sets on Monday. The 30-year-old failed to defend his Munich Open title last week with a straight sets defeat to in-form Miomir Kecmanovic in a run of frustrating form that dates back to losing his other title defence to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Qatar Open final back in February.
CARLOS ALCARAZ
Carlos Alcaraz celebrated his 18th birthday at this stage of the Madrid Open last season in a straight-sets defeat to his idol Rafael Nadal but even then the tennis world was aware of a new star rising. Since then, and two days before he turns 19 here in Madrid, the Spaniard has broken the top 10, reached the quarter-finals of the US Open and won a first Masters title at the Miami Open. Alcaraz has won three ATP titles this season including wo on clay at ATP 500 events in Rio and most recently at the Barcelona Open.

Nikoloz Basilashvili is one of the most unpredictable tennis players on tour but this match looks beyond even his random surges of brilliance as he takes on Spain’s newest idol Carlos Alacaraz in Madrid. Basiliashvili has failed to win back-to-back matches since the Qatar Open, a run of six tournaments, but Alcaraz looks the solid favourite anyway as he takes a five-match winning streak into the second round of the Madrid Open. The Spaniard will be welcomed like the champion he is by a jubilant home crowd in Madrid and he is likely to blast Basilashvili off the court as he comes back to the tournament that seemed to anoint him as the next big thing this time last year. Alcaraz could rank as highly as world number six if he wins the title on Sunday but right now his level is arguably third or fourth in the world. Back him to win in straight sets.
