It is difficult to say where world number 15 Matteo Berrettini is at ahead of the US Open. The 26-year-old lost to Frances Tiafoe in three sets last week in Cincinnati to make it three defeats on the spin since reaching the Gstaad Open final last month and it is hard to tell if he is suffering any affects from cruelly contracting covid-19 on the eve of Wimbledon. Berrettini was a semi-finalist here in 2019 before losing to eventual champion Rafael Nadal and he has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his last four Grand Slams, losing thrice to Djokovic including last season’s Wimbledon final and most recently to eventual champion Nadal at the Australian Open.
THE PREDICTION
World number 120 Nicolas Jarry qualified well to make the main draw of the US Open for the first time since 2019. The Chilean enjoyed a brief flurry of resurgent form this summer with a run to the quarter-finals of the Gstaad Open, having spent much of the last few years on the Challenger circuit, with seven out of his eight sets played seeing tiebreaks. That could be a useful addition to the pick here for Matteo Berrettini to come through a tricky opener, given that Jarry has won at least a set in each of his last nine Grand Slam matches. Back Berrettini to win outright here with four sets fairly likely given his lack of recent tennis and add at least a tiebreak in the match between two heavy hitters.
